The Moravian-Silesian region with its capital Ostrava, situated in the north-east of the Czech Republic, embraces most of the Czech Silesia and part of northern Moravia. This highly developed industrial region features primarily the energy industry, metallurgy, machine engineering and coal mining. Due to the prevailing industrial production the densely populated region’s environment is heavily polluted; it is also known for high unemployment rate. Nevertheless, the mountain ranges of Jeseníky and Beskydy, as well as the nearby Wallachia, offer splendid and mostly not too difficult hiking tours and unmatched views of the landscape. The main magnet of this peculiar region, however, are the old wooden houses and folklore – traditional crafts, folk manners and customs. In addition to the Protected Natural Area Jeseníky it also features Protected Natural Areas Podyjí and Beskydy.
On the obverse side of the token which features Ostrava motifs we can see the best known landmarks of the town – the Townhall, the Church of Virgin Mary the Queen situated in the Mariánské hory Ostrava district, the Old Townhall housing the museum, as well as the mining tower of the Landek mine and the Cathedral of the Divine Saviour. Showing in the background is the outline of Vítkovické ironmills, often also nicknamed the “Ostrava Hradčany“. In the upper part the motif of the token is complemented with the municipal coat-of-arms and a legend in circumscription.
The reverse side of the token is devoted to the town of Opava. In the forefront the author placed the Townhall, behind it the Silesian Land Museum, the Church of the Assumption of Virgin Mary and the Church of St. Adalbert. The municipal coat-of-arms is featured in the upper part next to the townhall spire and a legend runs around the rim of the token.
